What exactly is mineral make-up and who should use it?

Mineral make-up is made from naturally occurring minerals such as zinc oxide, titanium dioxide and mica, which are ground up into fine particles and added to products like powders and foundations. Not only do they provide pigment (colour), but they also have sun protection and anti-inflammatory benefits. Because they’re mined from natural sources, they’re often found in natural products free of potentially irritating ingredients like parabens or artificial colours and fragrances. “And they’re so skin-friendly. A mineral like zinc oxide is considered to have no risk of skin irritation; it’s an anti-irritant and, potentially, an antioxidant,” says Dermalogica’s Sonette Donker. Just be aware of the difference between minerals and mineral oils. Steer clear of the latter, “especially if you have acne or oily skin that’s prone to breakouts,” advises Donker.
